On my first morning in Santiago with a 4x5 view camera slung over my shoulder, I turned a corner and there he was: Elvis, waiting at a bus stop. Through Alex, my companion and translator, I asked our impersonator, whose name was Pedro Ortega, about his outfit. “Elvis was the king. I honor him through my music.” I asked to make his picture, and he agreed with delight. When I was finished, I said to Pedro, “I have just arrived in Santiago to make portraits of the people. What can I expect?” After a long pause, and then a slight smile, he told me this: “We are a beautiful people. I wish good luck for you to find it.” His bus arrived, he shook my hand and off he went.
Pedro’s words reminded me that Madonna had a similar lyric in her song, Vogue, that went “Beauty’s where you find it.” I guess that Pedro might have been channeling the diva rather than his beloved king when he advised me. At any rate, I thought I would follow Pedro’s suggestion, and this is what I found: Santiago. Beauty.
